"RACINE COUNTY — With Donald Trump vanquishing all of his rivals for the GOP nomination, local elected Republicans reacted with a general sense of bewilderment Wednesday.

"'It absolutely amazes me how we've gotten where we're at,' said state Sen. Van Wanggaard, R-Racine.

"'Where we're at' is Trump essentially clinching the nomination after scoring a commanding win Tuesday in Indiana. Ohio Gov. John Kasich dropped out of the race Wednesday, mere hours after Texas U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz did the same, and a field that was once 17-deep is down to just one.

"Racine-area Republicans expressed trepidation about the New York billionaire at the top of the ballot, with Assembly Speaker Robin Vos not yet committing to vote for him.

"Vos, R-Rochester, said in a written statement that 'over the course of the next few months, I will listen to Donald Trump's ideas and see if he can earn my support and the support of other conservatives.'"
