From The Journal Times.com:
It's funny how lead in older homes and lead abatement are now a big deal in Racine. I remember a few years ago when lying John was going on and on about his NSP (Neighborhood Sterilization Program). At the same time, many of the older homes were being rehabbed without regard to lead hazards. Some of the contractors hired to do the work were not certified in lead abatement.
Pictures where taken, locations noted, and a city employee quit his job rather than continue to lie for lying John concerning lead abatement. Representatives from Madison came to Racine a number of times to teach the contractors lead abatement rules. It was, as they say, all fucked up.
It finally led to lying John announcing on radio, during an election debate, that he fired a city employee for embezzlement. That, in turn, led to a lawsuit, which, in turn, became a circus. Once the employee made his point, he settled the suit for its cost, trying to show the residents of Racine that he wasn't in it for the money, but to expose lying John.
But we're supposed to forget all that and get excited now about lead abatement.
P.S. About twenty years ago, they rebuilt a section of Chatham Street from the sewers up. It was then that I learned that the lateral feeding water to our house was lead. That may explain a lot of things.
